Candle Making Recipes – Balloon Candle

Grab a balloon, some wax, paraffin or regular, and a wick. That’s it – Let’s get started.

Melt your wax in a double boiler, old electric skillet or an old saucepan at a temperature between 165 and 185 degrees. Dip a water-filled balloon into the melted wax and pull it out quickly, allowing the wax to cool and set. Repeat continuously until a 1cm thick wax shell forms around the balloon. Deflate the balloon and take it out of the candle’s center.

Start pouring the warm wax, rotating around the shell continuously until the interior surface is almost entirely covered. Insert the wick and pour in the remaining wax. Hold the wick until it is supported by wax that has colled and firmed. Your wax creation is complete!

Candle Making Recipes - Beeswax Candle

Grab your scissors and a sheet of beeswax and some cotton wick. Cut the beeswax sheet in half. Choosing one of the sheets, place the wick on the long side with 1 inch of the wick extending past both ends of the beeswax.

Using your fingertips, gently spool the beeswax sheet around the wick…sealing the wick securely to the wax. The heat from your hands should create a seamless candle. Continue to tightly roll the beeswax. Make sure it is straight as you go along.

Upon reaching the end, use the heat of your fingertips to seal the border of the beeswax candle. Trim the wick at both ends. The one that is to be your base, cut flush against the wax. The other end, which will be your candle top, snip to about 1/4 inch above the wax.

This is all the more important if you are going to sell your homemade soaps. A simple way to show the soaps are yours is to stamp the soap with your choice of rubber or other stamp. You can purchase rubber stamps from craft shops that work well, however choose simple designs that transfer well to the soap and avoid fussy detail that loses its definition in that medium. Other choices are to make your own stamps from lino tiles or wood blocks or even potato stamps made by yourself or your child. It is time to stamp your soap once it has been through the gel stage and has started to set, but is still soft enough to mark with the stamp. When you make homemade soap you have a special product and adding your personal stamp makes it just that much more distinctive.

The main reason a mold leaks if you’re using putty is that the outside surface of the mold isn’t completely clean. The slightest amount of dirt or oil can keep the putty from adhering properly and will cause a leak.

Probably the most common reason for leak is wax on the outside of the mold. Obviously, it’s not surprising that candle molds often have some waxy residual on both the inside and outside. A thin layer of wax on the bottom of a mold might not be noticeable and the putty will bond to it. Problems come up when you pour the hot wax in. It melts the wax on the outside of the mold breaking the bond in causing the leak.

The take-home message? Keep you molds scrupulously clean, at least where you intend to use putty.

The hardest part is really making sure the mold is clean. Using the putty itself is easy. Put the wick through the hole, attach to the wick holder at the other end. If your mold comes with a wick screw, you can use it (BTW – a wick screw can do a fairly good job of sealing the hole, but I wouldn’t count on it alone). With or without a screw, coil a tight spiral of about an inch of wick on the bottom of the mold and apply the putty over it.

Some candle makers to masking tape over the wick to prevent the putty from discoloring it . Just be sure the putty extends beyond the tape to make a tight seal with the mold.
